An Inspector Calls
Socialism
Socialism is the opposite of capitalism and is essentially the empowerment of society's workers. Socialism was a fresh, popular and fashionable movement in 1944. Priestley was a socialist in his political views like many writers at the time, When labor won the 1945 election the majority of Britons were concerned about social issues such as housing, employment and healthcare. Labor had promised full employment, affordable housing and a national health service. Eva Smith, a worker, is mistreated by her first capital boss in An Inspector Calls. It was the classic tail of socialist vs capitalist. She suffers four injustices after that that give her a very negative impression of capitalism. In his final speech, the inspector warns that only socialism can help mankind prevent tragedies in the future.
